Usually the open spot in our schedule is Monday. Unfortunately, that's the day of the week that many museums and learning centers are closed. Earlier this month Eli's preschool had a two week spring break, however, so we made the most of extra free time...
The Crab Cove Visitor's Center in Alameda is only open Wednesday through Sunday, so that was on our must-do list. It is small, but worth the drive if you like learning about ecosystems, waterways, and history.
Eli liked peeking through the porthole at the dungeness crab, but there were tanks full of local fish too.
They have coloring pages, puzzles, and educational toys for the tots. We had the sleepy spot to ourselves for a while and then made some new friends. When the school bus rolled in for a field trip, it got busy in a hurry.
Along with natural history, the displays cover maritime history in the area.
Eli loved this diorama about the way Indians lived. He was intrigued by the teeny campfire -- and promptly asked if they were making s'mores.
Outside we made our own pretend campfire complete with imaginary marshmallows. (A lot fewer calories in that kind.)
There are some nature trails and a freshwater lagoon to explore, but we got rained out before exploring that far. We'll be back! The Center is on the edge of Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach, so there is a lot to do and see on a return visit.
