I wrote some blog posts about the joys of getting my writing room in order after our big move. One of my many happy discoveries came from more efficiently grouping my books by topic.
Huh. I had no idea I had so many cookbooks based on children's stories...
The discovery came at a good time. We've been reading aloud to Eli since he was a newborn, but it was on our three-week road trip across the country this summer (when he was three and a half years old) that I discovered how ready he was to hear chapter books. As we drove between Laura Ingalls Wilder sites, he listened with absorption to Little House in the Big Woods. (Click here to see travel posts with photos.) He loved seeing the places where the stories happened. Even better, some of the sites allowed him to try out games and chores described in the books. He even got to taste food inspired by them. There's such magic in that. Stories come alive in a whole new way.
