We visited the Athens Ben Epps Airport this weekend for a program put on by the Athens library. (Click HERE to read the historic marker.)
There are some interesting year-round displays including this one about UGA graduate and Thunderbird One pilot Richard McSpadden. (Click HERE for more.)
The flight-line fire station was open for visitors...
We were allowed out on the tarmac to see a few planes...
In the back part of the passenger terminal, there were craft tables set up for kids -- paper airplanes, balsa wood gliders, and homemade windsocks.
Eli had a grand time making his windsock. Old pants legs were provided and Eli picked one that was khaki green. He used fabric markers to draw on it but also pasted on cloth scraps. A band of plastic cut from a 2-liter soda bottle went into the top to help hold the windsock open. We folded the pant leg over it and stapled it in place. Staples also fastened on some fabric strip streamers.
I sewed Eli's weatherproof string hanger on to the top in three places.
It's a great craft for this time of year. We can easily tell the direction of those spring breezes!
The library's aviation program was actually designed for Baby Boomers, but we were glad they kept kids in mind. (There were lots of folks there with grandkids.) Hope they offer more programs like this in the future. We loved it!
