The winter was fairly mild last year and there weren't many puddles around our rental house until spring. With the arrival of the polar vortex, I realized ice was a distant memory for a Georgia five year-old. Thus on yesterday's warmer afternoon we decided to be explorers. The leftover water along a nearby road was still in shadow, so the deepest water was covered by over an inch of ice even if the edges were lacy. It was fun watching Eli learn the qualities of this material -- so cold it makes your fingers ache, slippery, hard, transparent and shining, difficult to crack as a thick sheet but easy to shatter in shards, flat in some spots while bumpy or wavy in others, clear or full of bubbles or encasing bits of nature...
I love discovering the world with my little guy.
