Almost a year ago now, Brian headed back to California for a business trip and I was moping around, wishing I could see our old friends too. One of those friends kindly took some cuttings from her lemon tree for me, sending them back with Brian just as she'd often sent us home from playdates with fragrant yellow lemons. Poor old battered plants! Those cuttings were in the bottom of a suitcase for almost a week before I got them. The leaves were leathery and crumpled. But I planted them in a pot and hoped for the best. (Click HERE to see that post.)
It worked! The cuttings soon had glossy leaves again and started to grow! During the harsh winter, I moved the pot of lemon cuttings into the garage or house whenever hard freezes came. Now spring is almost here and there are tiny new leaves as well as some tiny white flowers. I really should have repotted when they were completely dormant, but the milder days of February took me by surprise. Better a little late than never. Today the crowded cuttings got their own pots and I'll soon share some with friends. Eli and I even shared some cuttings with a nice young lady we met while buying potting soil.
Many thanks for the cuttings, Sara! Even more, thanks for the lovely memories. Now we're daydreaming of Janet's Gentle One Lemon Lemonade, homemade lemon curd, lemon meringue pies...
