I found this daffodil in our yard. It came up at the edge of the woods, finding sun through a little hole in a leaf. As it grew, it lifted the leaf but it couldn't quite break through it. Ever had a time in your life like that? A new start that struggled? Yeah. Me too. So I lifted the leaf off and the daffodil soon bloomed.
We found our new house in March last year, but I didn't get a chance to see it in its spring finery. It is fun to wander about the yard, finding buds and bulbs where I didn't expect them. My favorite is the big patch of daffodils hiding behind our back fence. Why would anybody plant them behind a fence? But then I took a step back. That swatch of daffodils also reaches into our neighbor's yard. Their lot is graced with several very old fruit and nut trees. Here they are last month, a lovely backdrop for sunset and tiny moon...
The neighbors also have a huge old spreading tree that stands alone, pictured here when they had floodlights on during the recent snow...
Then across the street I saw some old cedar trees growing in a line, a sure sign of an old fence row. And once the mulch on the forest floor settled for winter behind our house, I found traces of old bottles and pots. Daffodil bulbs can live a very long time, so I think they were planted around a farmhouse. I'm guessing that my neighbor's lot (and the corner of ours) used to be an old homeplace. I love that.
